Gel-X is similar to acrylic in the way it is a nail extension. Gel-X uses a flexible full cover nail tip and builder gel/rubber base to extend the nail. This creates a structured nail that is more flexible and natural looking as opposed to acrylic. Builder gel can also be used on the natural nail to help with nail growth and health.
